Gil and Shelley

Gil and Shelley are among the best and most experienced salsa teachers, competitors and performers in the UK. They have years of experience in training dancers of all levels and are the founders of Pexava Dance Company in London (www.pexava.com).

Gil is renowned for his creativity, unique turn patterns, musicality and shines, which he teaches with a strong emphasis on technique. He started learning salsa in his native Mexico. Since then, he has placed at world championship level competitions against renowned competitors, including Fernando Sosa, Oliver Pineda and Adrian and Anita. His titles include European Silver Medallist, World Latin Dance Cup Bronze Medallist and World Salsa Open fifth place.

Shelley is an infectiously enthusiastic performer and teacher. Her experience and commitment make her an exceptional teacher. She started learning salsa with the Oxford University Salsa Society as a student and she even coached the Oxford University Salsa Team in the early 2000’s. Her achievements since then have been truly inspirational. She has held several national and international competition titles, including European Silver and Bronze Medallist, as well as World Semi-Finalist and Top UK Dance Act.

Since uniting, Gil and Shelley have taught and performed in over 20 countries and they are the UK’s most sought-after professionals at European congress level. Their semi-professional team, “Alma de Pexava”, is currently the only semi-professional group that regularly represents UK salsa at congresses across Europe. They have completed over 40 training courses to date, many of which have given their students the opportunity to perform internationally. As well as representing UK salsa worldwide, Gil and Shelley are very active on the salsa scene at home, organising regular classes and parties that are very popular within the dance community.

They have made an appearance on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and they are salsa consultants for the West End’s “Matilda the Musical”. They have also made it through to the Judges’ Shortlist on Sky One’s “Got To Dance” winning 3 gold stars, in addition to featuring on the catwalk on “Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model” and being featured, credited dancers in the movie “Cuban Fury”.

Gil and Shelley bring authentic On2 salsa technique and style from the studios and dance floors of New York, Puerto Rico and Italy. Their professionalism, dedication and years of experience have earned them the reputation of being world-class teachers.
